 African Masks                                                                                                            1999

The masks originate from the Ivory Coast to Nigeria, from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Ghana. Through violent processes of colonization, these spiritual and artistic objects made their way into the hands of Europeans and Americans. Were they commercially manufactured or were they sacred objects? Who was meant to see them? Were they purchased or taken by force?

Through experiments with darkroom processes, these images strive to investigate the ethereal unknown.
