Drill Teams                                                                                                               1996

The tradition of drill teams in Black neighborhoods dates to earlier in the century when returning Black soldiers reportedly taught military drills to neighborhood children. In Philadelphia, the teams are woven into the fabric of the city. Teams participate in grand openings, weddings, funerals, among with other events. These images focus primarily on the 75-member Harris Steppers located in North Philly led by Rufus Lyles as they stepped their way through a hot summer of practice and parades.
