Photojournalist Ron Tarver wants to bridge the gap between documentary and fine-art photography.
When he went to work at the Philadelphia Inquirer 14 years ago, he said it was taboo for photographers on staff to refer to their images as “art.” That bias is changing: The Inquirer Magazine recently dedicated an entire issue to a collection of Tarver's photographs of the Wissahickon Valley in Fairmount Park. He is currently at work on a series of subtly textured images of area bridges, and has two books in development: one, an outgrowth of the Wissahickon story and the other a series of photos of African-American cowboys.
